ted.tom I would like to visit Neuschwanstein. I will be in St. Anton, Austria, with one day in Innsbruck and one day in Munich. It is 2hrs from munich. How far from Innsbruck? Any public Tranasportation? Any castles in Munich?
Merlin Why, for god's sake, Neuschwanstein?
Because that place seems to be one of the most loved by all kind of tourists to central Europe, and we do have questions about it in this forum now and then, I have to make something clear:
Neuschwanstein has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with a medieval european castle! It's the product of the very strange fantasies of a mentially sick bavarian king of the 19th century and one of the darker chapters of german castle-history. To build it, the impressive ruins of the medieval castle Hohenschwangau were completely destroyed and replaced by this Disney-like structure. I don't know if there's public transport to this place. But if you're in Innsbruck, I'd recommend a days trip to the lower Engadine (Switzerland), to visit one of the most beautiful medieval castles of the Alps in Tarasp (very near to the austrian border):

Tarasp is on my list of castles to see on my next trip. Along with the Churburg armour collection.

Merlin Good idea, Erik. I already visited the Churburg five years ago on a trip to Meran. The armour collection, as well as the castle itself are very impressive. If you drive from Tarasp to the austrian border, don't forget to make a quick stop at Ramosch. Just above the road, on a hill west of this lovely engadine village, you'll find the ruins of Castle Tschanüff. (That strange name comes from the raetoromanic term "Casa nova" - meaning "new house"). You don't even have to leave the road to take a couple of good fotographs. Have a look at:

My girlfriend's family owns a house nearby, so I visit that castle very often. It's definitely one of my favourites.
